About me
Mr Simon Toh has been a Consultant Surgeon at Portsmouth Hospital since 2000, and Clinical Director of the Surgical Unit between 2007-2013.
He is currently the Director of the Victory Institute of Minimal Access and Robotic Surgery, a simulation centre dedicated to research in and development of training for keyhole surgery. Recent interests include the application of robotics (Da Vinci) in general surgery and innovative treatments including keyhole surgery for emergency abdominal conditions and for large hernias.
He qualified from Guy's Hospital in 1986, and pursued a training in general surgery in centres of excellence in London (Royal Marsden, Great Ormond Street, Hammersmith, St.George's) before undertaking research in acute pancreatitis in Southampton followed by advanced surgical training in Royal Adelaide, Australia and Basingstoke Hospital. He has vast experience in oesophageal and gastric cancer surgery (as part of a Cencer Centre at Portsmouth) and keyhole surgery for gallstones, reflux, hernias and acute abdominal conditions.He recently won an Anticoagulation Achievement Award 2017 for Best Work in the Prevention of Hospital Acquired Thrombosis and is a local principle investigator in the GAPS NIHR Trial of anti-thrombosis stockings,a Chief Investigator of the Dynamic Hiatal Hernia mesh trial, and has ongoing research in antibiotic resistance, frailty scores, mesh design, simulation and human factors in surgical education.
