About me
Miss Rashmi Akshikar is a consultant eye surgeon with over 20 years of surgical and clinical experience in this field .She is an expert in managing routine and complex retinal diseases and a world-renowned specialist in treating eye inflammation. She is a highly experienced and skilled surgeon having performed over 2,500 cataract surgeries and over 10,000 ocular /intravitreal injections, implants and retinal laser procedures.
Rashmi provides specialist and personalised treatment for age related macular degeneration, a holistic management of diabetic eye disease including injections, implants and lasers. She works closely with the diabetic physicians. She is the “ Go To” expert in treating complex and uncommon retinal diseases with almost 20 new patient referrals every week, both in her NHS and private practice.
Rashmi is the lead clinician for inflammation and immune-suppression at the Imperial Healthcare NHS trust and a world expert in her field. She treats almost 50 to 70 patients a week referred for specialist opinion and performs international consultations across Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America for these specialist conditions. She is a member of international medical societies including EURETINA, EUGOGO and IOS.
Rashmi has extensive experience in use of specialist immunomodulation drugs (steroids, monoclonals and biologics) used to treat intraocular, orbit, ocular surface and neuro inflammation, with a special mention to immunosuppression of Thyroid eye disease.
Rashmi performs high volume and complex cataract surgery and is proficient in use of specialist intraocular lenses including torics and multifocal implants. Her niche skillset is Uveitis cataract surgery in young patients, which is the most challenging of all. In patients with retinal conditions, she provides combined management with surgery and intravitreal injections/implants.
Rashmi treats ocular emergencies as well as a wide range of general ophthalmology ailments such as dry and watery eyes, allergy disorders, lumps and bumps of the lids etc. Being trained as an eye surgeon in the armed forces, Rashmi has extensive experience in treating trauma.
Rashmi has been involved in research for well over 2 decades and has a number of publications, trials and research projects to her credit. She regularly presents in international conferences and contributes to journals. She is a regional lead for ophthalmic local training and enjoys training young surgeons and clinicians.
Being trained in India and coming from a medical family heritage dedicated to care of the less fortunate, Rashmi participates in cataract surgery camps every year-especially in remote regions of India and is associated with a number of charities.
