About me

Neill Patani is a Consultant Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Breast Surgeon at University College London Hospital, with expertise in the management of breast cancer and all aspects of breast disease, including infection, benign conditions and risk-reduction. He has a particular interest in extending the scope of breast conserving surgery with oncoplastic techniques, including therapeutic mammoplasty and in the de-escalation of breast and axillary surgery, including targeted axillary dissection, after neo-adjuvant therapy.

He has experience with a range of breast reconstruction techniques, including nipple-sparing approaches and one-stage pre-pectoral implant reconstruction with acellular dermal matrix, in addition to lipo-modelling, nipple reconstruction and symmetrisation surgery.

Neill completed his training at the Royal Marsden Hospital with a National Oncoplastic Fellowship in Breast Surgery. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and undertook his Higher Surgical Training in London and the North-West Thames region, including Charing Cross, Hillingdon, Northwick Park, St Bartholomew's and the Royal London Hospitals, leading to the award of his Certificate of Completion of Training in General Surgery with a specialty interest in Breast Surgery. His Basic Surgical Training was undertaken at UCLH and the Royal Free Hospital. He graduated from UCL Medical School with Honours and was awarded undergraduate prizes and distinctions in Medicine and Surgery.

Neill plays an active role in teaching and training, he is a Faculty Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and National Representative for General Surgery Trainees at the Oncoplastic Breast Surgery Training Interface Group. He was a Surgical Teaching Fellow for Imperial College Medical School and Anatomy Demonstrator at the Royal Free & UCL Medical School. He also has an interest in quality improvement initiatives and is an Honorary Clinical Fellow for the national Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT) programme, with a role in evaluating and learning from litigation in breast surgery.

Research interests:

Neill is an Honorary Associate Professor at the UCL Cancer Institute and Postdoctoral Clinical Research Fellow at the Francis Crick Institute, with an interest in laboratory, translational and clinical breast cancer research. He works collaboratively with scientists, oncologists and radiologists, exploring how breast cancer metabolism can be targeted for functional imaging and novel therapies. He is currently involved in clinical trials studying the optimal sequencing of breast cancer treatments and the de-escalation of surgery to the breast and axilla according to treatment response.

Neill has undertaken a PhD at the Royal Marsden Hospital and Institute of Cancer Research, studying response and resistance to endocrine therapy, including the development of biomarkers to personalise treatment. He received 1st Class Honours for his BSc in Tumour Biology at UCL, investigating some of the earliest genetic events in the multi-step model of breast cancer development.
