Dr. Sebastian Zeki is a gastroenterologist at St Thomas' Hospital in London one of the country's leading tertiary referral centres. He is also a senior clinical lecturer at Kings College University and Barts cancer institute.
He prioritises making the patient experience of gastroenterology as comfortable as possible whilst resolving symptoms and illnesses as quickly. He sees patients with a wide range of conditions, making certain that the patient is at ease when explaining their symptoms and is attentive to the wider impact that a patient's illness is having on their life.
Dr. Zeki qualified in medicine from Cambridge University and University College London in 2001. He undertook his postgraduate medical training in London during which time he also completed a PhD on the genomics of oesophageal cancer, under Professor Sir Nicholas Wright and Dr Stuart Macdonald. This was recognised and presented at national and international meetings and recognised with several prizes from British, European and American Gastroenterological Societies. He subsequently completed further clinical training alongside postdoctoral research at Addenbrooke's Hospital and the Medical Research Council Hutchison laboratory, Cambridge and Jikei University Hospital, Tokyo.
Dr Zeki's extensive experience has given him a unique skill set in the detection, accurate diagnosis and therapy of a number of gastroenterological complaints from reflux to performing endoscopic cancer resections.
His main research interests include upper gastrointestinal cancer (stomach and oesophagus) diagnosis and therapy as well as the detection of their precursors. He also has an active clinical and research interest in food allergies and their effect on the gut encompassing conditions such as eosinophilic oesophagitis as well as movement disorders of the oesophagus and acid reflux related conditions.
