About me

I am a Paediatric Gastroenterologist and Honorary Reader at the Centre for Paediatric Gastroenterology in Sheffield.

I graduated from Aberdeen Medical School in 1985 and started paediatric gastroenterology training in 1987/8. In the early 1990s I spent five years working in Australia, as a Clinical Research Fellow in gastroenterology and cystic fibrosis at the Royal Children's Hospital Foundation in Brisbane with Prof Ross Shepherd. While there I was awarded my Medical Doctorate on cystic fibrosis genetics and energy expenditure.

General gastroenterology, gastro-oesophageal reflux and vomiting, food allergy (gastrointestinal allergy), Coeliac disease, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, excessive crying and discomfort in infancy, nutritional concerns, feeding problems, swallowing difficulties.

Personal interests

Fell running, climbing, skiing, and mountain biking are amongst my interests.

Publications

I have published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles including many original research studies in the area of infant and childhood gastro-oesophageal reflux, and also over 30 invited reviews, and heads a large research group. I am author of over 40 Paediatric GI Chapters in International Textbooks and am co-author of 7 paediatric textbooks including the standard text for MRCPCH, ‘Concise Paediatrics’. I am co-editing the textbook which will become the standard for the paediatric oesophagus and stomach at present.
