About me
I am an ophthalmic surgeon, based in Edinburgh, with more than 20 years experience. I was appointed as a consultant based in the Edinburgh Eye Pavilion in 1999 and have practised at Spire Shawfair since it opened. I only offer cataract surgery & use anaesthetic drops (no jags!). I consult and operate on a wednesday with virtually all patients offered a date for surgery within 2 weeks of their consultation.
My results from Shawfair hospital taken from my last annual appraisal (9.1.25) are:
a visual outcomes
203 cataract surgeries personally performed. Visual results based upon all available returned optician postoperative refraction forms (164/203) which comprised 81% of all surgery. 99% (162/164) of eyes had better than or equal to 6/12 best corrected visual acuity (bcva) at 6/52 postoperatively (po) benchmarking figure 92%1. 92% (150/164) were equal to or better than 6/12 u/a.
Of those patients who had both an u/a distance & near va recorded (50/164) 66% had u/a monocular vision equal to or better than 6/12 & N10. Two patients had bcva < 6/12 due to a pre-existing problem; AMD 6/12-2 & keratoconus 6/20
b biometric accuracy
99% (162/164) of the unit's biometry was within 1 diopter, benchmarking figure 85%1
c complications (all 203 cases included)
100% were by phakoemulsification. 0% (0/203) posterior capsular tear (pct), benchmarking figure 1.1%1 One patient developed CMO in one of two eyes post uneventful surgery which resolved on topical treatment with 6/10 vision at three months postoperatively.
