About me
Dr Michael Mendall is a highly experienced Consultant Gastroenterologist with expertise in the diagnosis and management of a wide range of digestive disorders. He combines evidence-based medicine with a patient-centred approach, ensuring that patients receive clear explanations, personalised care, and the latest treatments supported by medical research.
After graduating in medicine from the University of Cambridge, Dr Mendall completed his postgraduate training in London and has worked in both teaching hospitals and district general hospitals throughout his career. He has extensive experience in the management of conditions including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), coeliac disease, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), Helicobacter pylori infection, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation, and unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms.
Dr Mendall has performed many thousands of endoscopic procedures during his career. He is highly experienced in upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and colonoscopy, using these techniques to investigate symptoms such as abdominal pain, reflux, swallowing difficulties, anaemia, altered bowel habit, rectal bleeding, and weight loss. He has extensive expertise in the detection and removal of bowel polyps, surveillance of inflammatory bowel disease, and the diagnosis of gastrointestinal cancers and other important digestive conditions. He places great emphasis on patient comfort, safety, and clear communication throughout the investigation process.
Alongside his clinical work, Dr Mendall has an international reputation as a medical researcher. He has published extensively in leading medical journals and has made important contributions to our understanding of Helicobacter pylori infection, inflammation, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and inflammatory bowel disease. His research has helped advance knowledge of how lifestyle and environmental factors influence the development of chronic disease.
Dr Mendall has a particular interest in preventive medicine and healthy ageing. He believes that excellent medical care involves not only diagnosing and treating disease but also helping patients understand how they can reduce future health risks and maintain long-term wellbeing.
Patients appreciate his approachable manner, thorough assessments, and ability to explain complex medical issues in a clear and understandable way. He takes time to understand each patient's concerns and works collaboratively to develop treatment plans tailored to their individual circumstances.
In addition to his clinical and research activities, Dr Mendall has been actively involved in teaching and mentoring medical students, junior doctors, and specialist trainees throughout his career. He remains committed to providing the highest standards of gastroenterological care and keeping up to date with advances in digestive health and preventive medicine.
