About me

Hello, and welcome. I know from personal experience that it can be hard to find the right therapist for you. I hope by telling you a little about my experience and way of working that you can make an informed choice for your therapy.

I am an experienced, Senior Accredited Counsellor and EMDR Europe Accredited Practitioner with a passion for normalising mental ill health and supporting people in their recovery. I can provide my services to anyone in the UK via video sessions and have worked with clients from the North of Scotland to the South of England. I warmly and sensitively welcome neuro-divergent and LGBTQ+ clients.

My core approach is Counselling (talking therapy) which can be very helpful for a wide range of issues. I give you a safe space where you can talk freely and without judgement. Feeling heard heard, validated and understood can be enormously healing.

Where your issues stem from an overwhelming or traumatic experience, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) Therapy can be more appropriate. EMDR Therapy is an evidence based, globally recognised, advanced form of psychotherapy involving bi-lateral stimulation of the body to relieve disturbing memories, uncomfortable feelings and somatic symptoms.

I work with many issues, specialising in working with trauma, and my particular areas of interest include:

- Birth trauma and any stage of pregnancy loss
- Childhood trauma
- Accidents and workplace injury
- Family relationship difficulties
- Parenting concerns
- Separation and divorce
- Sexual abuse
- Complicated grief including bereavement by suicide
- Work/job related stress and career transition
- Health anxiety
- Neuro-divergent related issues
- Peri/menopause impact on mental health
- Men's issues
- Direct and indirect experience of trauma arising from the criminal justice system

I use an integrated approach which means I work in a Person Centred (client led) way with a Psychodynamic perspective (exploring the past and the unconscious mind). I may offer EMDR Therapy where I considered it may be helpful for you.

When we begin working together, I will invite you to tell me about your present concerns and your past experiences as I believe that these are at the root of our mental heath difficulties. When I have a good sense of what may be causing your symptoms, I will recommend either a talking therapy approach, EMDR Therapy, or a blend of both. You are free to choose what you find most helpful and I will give you information to help you decide.

My clinical experience includes working privately as an associate with an Edinburgh based private mental health practice, Employee Assistance Providers, rehabilitation services and insurance companies. I have also worked in the voluntary sector, managing a school based counselling service, supporting parents, carers and teachers and several years counselling children and young people. I am also Counselling Service Manager for a charity.

My previous career in the banking sector in management roles where I survived restructures, recessions and redundancy gives me a deep understanding of what life is like for clients who work in similar, stressful corporate environments. I can relate to clients experiencing job insecurity and career transitions having made that difficult journey myself.

My personal, painful life experiences have given me a capacity for deep empathy and compassion for others' suffering. I am no stranger to trauma and with me you can feel psychologically held, accepted as you are, and experience a healing relationship. I look forward to hearing from you.
