About me

Hello, my name is Neil Sabin, I am a clinical psychologist and Psychotherapist with more than 40 years of experience of working with adults over 18 who have been struggling with psychological distress. I would like to offer you a space in which to explore your difficulties with curiosity and compassion. I believe that psychological therapy can be an important part of an individual's move towards healing and recovery.

I left school uncertain about a career and ended up working in the construction and the hotel industries, and then became a qualified psychiatric nurse. I then went to university and trained as a clinical psychologist. I have worked in a variety of NHS clinical settings over the years, providing psychological therapies, supervising clinical trainees and managing and supporting a range of clinical staff.

I have completed trainings in the following: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Mindfulness based interventions and most recently, Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). My approach will, according to your needs, integrate elements of these therapies to co-create an appropriate intervention.
As an advocate of psychological therapy have taken part in a variety of individual and group therapies to benefit my own psychological understanding and I am committed to regular personal clinical supervision and continuing professional development.

We will begin by exploring together what brings you to therapy and create a shared understanding of your unique life story. From there, we can begin to make connections between your past and your current difficulties. My role will then be to help you bring attention to the unconscious emotional processes that underlie psychological and somatic difficulties. There will be a focus particularly on unconscious anxiety pathways and anxiety regulation and bring a degree of clarity and focus on the maladaptive psychological defences that give rise to our symptoms.
I am not 'neutral' but rather an active advocate for change and health and emphasise the importance of experiencing core emotions. In this way, emotional processing is bolstered and freedom gained from distressing symptoms and patterns of behaviour relating to the self and others.
An extensive body of published research evidence supports the efficacy of e.g. ISTDP as a treatment for a wide variety of emotional problems. Studies demonstrate that benefits are maintained in the long term.
