About me

I enjoy working with anyone with a musculoskeletal or exercise related problem, regardless of background. Until recently I spent over 20 years as an NHS consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine at Queens Medical Centre for over 20 years, and was privileged to provide care for NHS referrals, both local and national. Equally I have been in an incredibly fortunate position in working, for over 25 years, with some of the most elite athletes. Currently this elite work includes my position as Chief Medical Officer for England and Wales Cricket Board and as an Honorary Clinical Professor in Sports Medicine at Loughborough University.
My NHS Consultant post at QMC, Nottingham, started in 2001, following an MSc in Sports Medicine and an overseas Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Australian Institute of Sport.
This role saw me heavily involved in various aspects of healthcare development, including the development of the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine at Loughborough, lead for Training Programs in the East Midlands, Council member for the Faculty for SEM and SAC and National lead for National Recruitment and Workforce planning for Sport and Exercise Medicine. I have enjoyed working with PHE as a Special Advisor in Sports Medicine during the pandemic and supported a variety of public health campaigns for physical and mental health, including the NUH Prevention Strategy and Active Hospital program as well local initiatives such as Active Notts.
My career has also focused on the development of elite athlete medical services, working extensively with all aspects of care for athletes. This work has included 7 years as Lead Physician for the English Institute of Sport at Loughborough University, CMO for GB World Class Canoeing Program 1997-2017, Great Britain Rowing, Team GB and for LTA Great Britain Davis Cup team from 2001-2007 until moving to cricket full time.
This career has allowed to work at the Sydney and Athens Olympics and Melbourne Commonwealth Games, awards of the British Association of Sports Medicine travelling scholarship in 1998 and with the ECB, the BMJ award for Sport and Exercise Medicine Team of the year in 2013. In 2020 my time at the ECB saw a presentation with the annual Special award for services to cricket and an MBE in 2022 for Services to Sport during the Pandemic.
Throughout this period, I have also been fortunate enough to have spent over 20 years in football, largely as the Nottingham Forests lead Sports Physician until retiring in 2018 and more recently in the governance and welfare activities supporting premier league footballers.
