About me

Prof. Nick Peirce is Chief Medical Officer for England and Wales Cricket board and an Honorary Clinical Professor in Sports Medicine at Loughborough University. He has recently stepped down as an NHS Consultant and Head of Service in Sport and Exercise Medicine and Specialist Advisor to PHE and was recently awarded an MBE for 'Services to Sport during the Pandemic. He also retired from Lead Sports physician for Nottingham Forest in 2018, after 17 yrs. He has been extremely privileged to have combined working in both the NHS and elite sport and believes every patient whether elite or a regular exerciser deserves excellence in care. HIs career has seen commitment to keep people active and promoting physical activity.
Following an overseas Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), he has had a dual career serving both the public through the NHS but also developing elite athlete medical services.This has seen him has work extensively with all aspects of medical care for athletes including 7 years as Lead Physician fro the English Institute of Sport at Loughborough University, CMO for GB World Class Canoeing Program 1997-2017, Great Britain Rowing, Team GB and for LTA Great Britain Davis Cup team 2001-2007 until moving to cricket full time. Dr Peirce has attended Sydney and Athens Olympics and Commonwealth Games. He was awarded the British Association of Sports Medicine travelling scholarship in 1998 and with the ECB won the BMJ award for Sport and Exercise Medicine Team of the year in 2013. He was Nottingham Forest lead doctor for nearly 20 years until retiring from football in 2018 and now is full-time overseeing the medical and wellbeing delivery across all of professional and recreational cricket.

During his 20+ years as an NHS Consultant he was heavily involved in various aspects of healthcare development including the development of new NHS Sport and Exercise Med serrvices, setting up the National Centre for SEM at Loughborough University, a National clinic for exercisers with Type 1 diabetes, lead for Training Programs in the East Midlands, Council member for the Faculty for SEM and SAC and lead for NHS National Recruitment and Workforce planning for Sport and Exercise Medicine, as well as working with PHE in relation to recent campaigns for mental health (‘Every Mind Matters’). More recently he helped drive the NUH Prevention Strategy including adopting the Active Hospitals program.

Other activities include Chairing several committees, editorial Boards for BJSM and CJSM, International Medical Committees and active involvement in research and injury surveillance. He currently supervises 6 Phds at Bath, Loughborough, St Georges, Birmingham and Bangor University looking at injury surveillance, osteoarthritis, cardiac screening, biomechanics, spondylolysis, concussion and helmet design as well as research interests in bone development in athletes, metabolic medicine and diabetes and exercise.
