About me
Robert is an internationally renowned academic rheumatologist. He trained in medicine in London, earned his PhD at the University of Oxford and, after working as Lecturer in Birmingham, moved to Harvard Medical School to continue his research. He subsequently returned to the UK to establish a new academic rheumatology group and became the first Professor of Rheumatology in Liverpool - setting up a group that became a EULAR Centre of Excellence for rheumatology research in Europe, formed a UK National Centre of Excellence for Behçet’s syndrome and the ARUK/MRC Centre for Musculoskeletal Health and Work.
His work is divided between research, which focuses on inflammatory rheumatic diseases with a special interest in neutrophils, and clinical service. Robert receives referrals from around the UK and abroad. He is consultant to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, medical advisor to UK patient groups, past Editor-in-Chief of Rheumatology and has a special interest in supporting the development of rheumatology in developing countries.
