About me

Dr Lauren Colgan is a Principal Clinical Psychologist with over 18 years of NHS experience and a background in leading psychological care for trauma, psychosis, and complex mental health problems. Lauren has a particular interest in the links between experiences such as trauma and mental health and uses this interest to support people to make sense of overwhelming difficulties. She is passionate about challenging stigma and finding hopeful paths forward, even when things feel stuck or overwhelming. She will take time to understand what matters to you, work at a pace that feels manageable, and adapt therapy together as your needs change.

Lauren has extensive experience in working with people from different cultural, gender and sexuality backgrounds and from across the lifespan, with expertise in supporting adolescents (14+), adults and their families. Lauren is an integrative practitioner and draws on her extensive CBT skills as well as Schema therapy, Narrative therapy and contextual therapy approaches (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy) to creatively support her clients' recovery. Lauren integrates Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) and attachment informed EMDR (ai-EMDR) to support clients whose mental health difficulties have deeper or long term origins. EMDR has a strong evidence base in alleviating the impact of trauma and various mental health disorders.

While working with Lauren you will be supported to identify goals for therapy which will be used to inform the direction of the sessions. Whether your goals are focussed more on change or on understanding, these goals will be reviewed regularly to ensure that sessions remain focussed and always in keeping with your priorities. Lauren might ask you to complete (optional) questionnaires of mood and wellbeing throughout therapy. These ensure that the effectiveness of therapy is constantly monitored and ensures that any difficulties you are experiencing can be addressed.

Sessions with Lauren are highly collaborative and can be adapted flexibly to meet your needs. If you prefer, Lauren can provide reading material or strategies to practise in between sessions to help you build on the work completed in the therapy room. Important members of your network (partner, family, friends, other professionals) can also be invited to join sessions if helpful to you.

Throughout your therapy journey, Lauren will support you to progress at a pace that feels right for you and use approaches that you decide on together. If there is anything that you are not happy with at any point during therapy, please do not hesitate to discuss this with Lauren, and she will endeavour to address this.

If you would like to know more about how Lauren works, or to ask any questions, please reach out. Lauren offers a free 15 minute consultation to all potential clients.
