About me

Hi, my name is Lindsay and I hope to provide a down-to-earth, accepting and reassuring counselling relationship for us to explore issues together. I hope to help you to work towards a better quality of life. I respect the courage it takes to seek help and open up about difficult things, and I am happy to receive emails if you have any questions at all. You can also look at my website on https://calmspacecounselling.weebly.com.

I offer sessions over the phone, over ‘zoom’ video link at the moment. I can work with clients from across the UK, although my local knowledge and links are primarily in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

In the first few sessions I might ask a lot of questions to find out more about you and what you want. I will also ask some questions about your life history, to understand how your past may be affecting your current difficulties. In a typical counselling session we can explore your difficulties together, to try to understand them. We can look at ways to improve coping methods. Also in counselling sessions, I will ask about your feelings, to help you to get in touch with them and express them.

I might sometimes suggest pausing and paying attention to how the body is feeling. We might talk about how emotions are ‘felt’ in the body. This type of body-oriented work is called somatic experiencing, and is particularly useful when you are dealing with anxiety, stress or trauma.

Before qualifying as a counsellor, I worked mainly as a support worker for charities and also spent some years working overseas, which helped me to learn about different cultures. My practice is welcoming to all communities and people, and I offer low-cost spaces for clients from marginalised communities. My particular area of experience for over ten years is in working with trauma, particularly sexual abuse trauma. I also work as a self-employed trainer providing training days on working with trauma, and have trained staff at Edinburgh University, the Scottish Parliament, and at various counselling or support services. I am qualified as a psychosexual and relationship therapist.

I am accredited with the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) and registered with the College of Sex and Relationship Therapists (COSRT). I am a fully qualified counsellor and have practised for over a decade. I attend monthly supervision of my work. I adhere to the BACP ethical framework. This means I always have your well-being, safety, and confidentiality at the heart of my work, and practice with respect and sincerity: see here http://www.bacp.co.uk/ethical_framework/
