About me
David is a Chartered Counselling Psychologist, registered with the British Psychological Society (BPS) and Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). He is also a Senior Accredited Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
David has been working as a Psychologist and Psychotherapist for over thirty years, helping people to move to a happier life. His many years of experience includes working within NHS Primary, Secondary Care Services and private practice. David has also taught for many years as a college and university lecturer and has helped and advised other therapists as a clinical supervisor and case work facilitator.
He works with individuals, couples and groups, from the age of eleven upwards. He has extensive experience of treating mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, relationships, self-esteem, sexual anxiety and identity issues. He can work with clients across the spectrum from mild to severe and he specialises in therapy for men.
His core approach is psychodynamic and he integrates a number of other modalities into this framework, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), solution-focused therapy and narrative therapy using stories and fairy tales. This integrative approach allows him to adapt his treatment to the needs of the individual.
David is very much aware that facing our concerns can be frightening and that therapy can only be effective if he is able to facilitate a safe therapeutic relationship, between the client and himself. He believes that most of our emotional problems arise from early relationship strategies which we developed so that we could feel more secure with our caregivers. However, these strategies can often prevent us from coping effectively as adults.
He sees his role as enabling you to safely explore and understand the strategies that are no longer helpful to you, so that you can move on to choose more effective ways of coping with your life. This will be achieved together and will be sustained by his belief in the timeless healing power of a relationship based on acceptance and trust, a belief that lies at the heart of all his work.
