About me

Abdul H Sultan is a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a special interest in Urogynaecology at Croydon University Hospital and is Honorary Reader at St. George's University of London. He has also been appointed Hon. Professor at Brunel University of London. His research involved studying the effects of childbirth on the pelvic floor and anal sphincters. This led to a landmark paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine and to a Doctorate. His pioneering work highlighted the deficiencies in training of doctors and midwives in detecting and repairing obstetric anal sphincter injuries.
He has served on the Scientific Committee of the International Urogynecology Association (Chairman), Wellbeing of Women, executive committee of the British Society of Urogynaecology and is on the Council of the Royal Society of Medicine and past president (Obstetrics and Gynaecology), and Croydon Medical Society (Past President)
He is currently a consultant in a busy tertiary referral urogynaecology department at Croydon University Hospital, and the unit is recognised for subspecialty training in urogynaecology with an active research programme.
The Croydon continence team was recently awarded the Hospital Doctor award for The Continence Team of the year (2005). In addition, he has received the prestigious overall UK Hospital Doctor of the Year award. He has over 300 publications, including textbook chapters, and is the principal author of the first comprehensive textbook on perineal and anal sphincter trauma. Hi has been awarded two Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Croydon Medical Society and the British Society of Urogynaecology.
