About me
I was appointed a Consultant in Leicester in 1996 as a Specialist Knee Surgeon. I am 1 of only 2 specialist Knee surgeons in the county ie I only treat and operate on Knee disorders.
I trained in London, Norwich, United States and Australia, and I therefore have a huge experience of assessing, and treating solely knee problems.
I have undergone surgery myself and I know that the prospect of a surgical operation is a daunting prospect for all patients. I therefore look to manage knee conditions with conservative treatment wherever it is possible and likely to be successful.
Surgery where it is required is carefully and gently carried out using a combination of tried and tested implants, a minimally invasive technique and small incisions wherever possible. This is less painful and promotes a more rapid discharge home and recovery.
The Total Knee Replacement that I use has one of the longest track records not only in the UK but also the world (DePuy PFC Sigma TKR).
I am one of a number of surgeons in the country doing larger numbers of Partial Knee Replacements (Medial, Lateral and PatelloFemoral). Not only is this safer and less painful than conventional total knee replacement but it also feels and works more like a "normal" knee afterwards.
For young active patients with early knee arthritis due to leg malalignment (bow-legs or knock-knee) I will use both a hinged off-loader brace to relieve symptoms and consider the use of a realignment Tibial or Femoral Osteotomy
as definitive treatment.
I am particularly interested in knee ligament injuries, particularly in their prevention, assessment after injury, and treatment. I trained under one of the first surgeons to perform Arthroscopic (keyhole) Knee surgery in the UK. I regularly perform Arthroscopic meniscus surgery
and Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstructions, usually as a day case.
My research has included work on meniscus (cartilage) repair, posterior cruciate ligament injury and reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament. Most recently i have worked on the problems of knee stiffness after knee injury/surgery, and a student I have been co-supervising has been awarded her PhD degree.
If I am unable to find out the cause of your problem I will refer to a network of National/International experts who will be able to help.
