About me

Mr Jahangir Ahmed is a Consultant ENT, Head & Neck, Thyroid and Sleep Airway Surgeon and Clinical Lead for ENT at the Royal London Hospital, Barts Health. He treats adults and children aged 5 and over, from common ENT problems to complex conditions affecting breathing, sleep, voice and swallowing.

Snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)

Mr Ahmed specialises in snoring, OSA and alternatives for patients unable to tolerate CPAP. A pioneer of hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS) in the UK, he implants both Genio and Inspire devices. He is the UK's highest-volume Genio implanter and its first accredited Genio surgical proctor, supporting the training of other surgeons. With experience of over 300 transoral robotic surgery (TORS) procedures, he offers drug-induced sleep endoscopy (DISE), palatal and tongue base surgery, epiglottic procedures, laser and coblation techniques. In his team's selected CPAP-intolerant patient cohort, over 75% have been able to discontinue CPAP following treatment.

Thyroid disease and head and neck cancer

He investigates and treats thyroid nodules, goitre and thyroid cancer, performing hemithyroidectomy, total and revision thyroidectomy, and neck dissection where indicated. His head and neck cancer practice includes tumours of the tonsil, tongue, throat, larynx, salivary glands and thyroid. As a member of specialist cancer multidisciplinary teams, he offers lymph node biopsy, neck dissection and, where appropriate, minimally invasive transoral laser and robotic surgery, with particular attention to protecting voice and swallowing function.

Nasal, sinus and salivary gland conditions

Mr Ahmed treats blocked nose, deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, allergies, sinusitis, nasal polyps, nosebleeds and nasal trauma. Procedures include septoplasty, turbinate reduction and advanced endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). He also treats parotid, submandibular and sublingual gland disorders, including tumours and ranulas, and performs salivary gland surgery.

Voice, swallowing and complex airway surgery

He manages hoarseness, vocal cord paralysis, laryngeal lesions, swallowing difficulties, pharyngeal pouch and airway narrowing. Treatments include microlaryngoscopy, laser surgery, vocal fold injection and medialisation, Botox, endoscopic or external pharyngeal pouch surgery and laryngotracheal reconstruction.

General and children's ENT

His general ENT practice includes tonsillitis, hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo, balance disorders, ear infections, earwax and glue ear. He sees and treats children aged 5 and above at OneWelbeck and the Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth (HJE), including for enlarged tonsils and adenoids, childhood snoring, recurrent tonsillitis, ear infections, hearing concerns and glue ear. Paediatric procedures include tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy and grommets when appropriate.

Experience and approach

Mr Ahmed studied at Cambridge and graduated in medicine from Imperial College in 2001, receiving the Gold Medal in Pathology. He holds an MA in Experimental Psychology and a PhD in Molecular Oncology from Barts Cancer Institute. Appointed consultant in 2017, he is also an Honorary Clinical Lecturer at Queen Mary University of London and is involved in surgical education, research and innovation.

He offers careful assessment, clear explanations and individualised treatment, including non-surgical options where appropriate, to help patients breathe, sleep, speak and swallow more comfortably.
