About me
Mr Rajesh Deshmukh is a Consultant Eye Surgeon with the world-renowned Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. He completed his ophthalmology training at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the University Eye Hospital, Bristol, and was awarded Specialist Registration in Ophthalmology by the General Medical Council (GMC), UK.
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (London), the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow, the International Council of Ophthalmology, and the World Congress of Refractive Surgeons and Visual Sciences (WCRSVS), where he is also a member of an international charter core group.
Mr Deshmukh completed an Advanced Senior Fellowship in Cataract Surgery and Vision Correction at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London. He also holds Certification in Laser and Refractive Surgery from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and a Postgraduate Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery from Ulster University.
In addition to his expertise in cataract and vision correction surgery, Mr Deshmukh is fellowship-trained in Medical Retinal Disorders from the University Eye Hospital, Bristol. He specialises in the management of macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, and diabetic retinopathy.
Mr Deshmukh is an expert cataract surgeon and has supervised and trained numerous ophthalmologists in cataract surgery since 2013. He offers a comprehensive range of refractive and laser vision correction procedures, with expertise in LASIK, PRK, PRESBYOND, and SMILE. He also has extensive experience with advanced intraocular lenses, including Multifocal lenses (for distance, intermediate, and near vision without glasses), EDOF lenses (extended depth of focus for enhanced spectacle independence), Toric lenses (for astigmatism correction), and EVO ICL (Implantable Contact Lens).
As a high-volume cataract surgeon, he performs over 1,000 cataract surgeries annually, with a posterior capsular rupture (PCR) rate of 0.3%, compared with the national average of 1.1% (National Ophthalmology Database Audit). He regularly receives referrals for complex and high-risk cataract cases and is regarded by peers as the go-to surgeon for manual small-incision sutureless cataract surgery (MSICS) when routine phacoemulsification is challenging. He is among the very few surgeons in the UK who both practise and teach MSICS and extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) for the management of advanced and complex cataracts.
In addition, Mr Deshmukh conducts dedicated MSICS training courses for Western-trained surgeons, with a strong focus on equipping them to deliver safe, high-quality cataract surgery in resource-limited settings. These programmes are designed to enable trainees to support community-based eye care initiatives and undertake meaningful outreach work in the developing world, where access to phacoemulsification and advanced technology may be limited.
He has worked as an invited facilitator for the World Health Organization (WHO), conducting teaching workshops across four of the five regions of the Sultanate of Oman. He trained 40 general ophthalmologists and 45 allied healthcare professionals in the screening, grading, and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, and played a key role in establishing referral pathways for the National Health Programme in Oman.
Mr Deshmukh has served as a research investigator in multiple randomised controlled trials across the subspecialties of cataract surgery and medical retina. His work has been published in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals, including AJO, JCRS, EYE, BJO, JNO, IJO, BMJ, and MEACO..
