About me
Hi, I'm Lindsey, a Clinical Psychologist with over 24 years' experience working with adolescents aged 13+ and adults, both in the NHS and in private practice.
I offer individual psychological therapy online and face-to-face in Huddersfield. I work primarily with adults and teenagers who may be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, low, stressed or stuck, particularly when they have been managing difficult experiences or patterns for a long time and are beginning to feel that the ways they have coped are no longer working so well.
You may be someone who is hard on yourself, puts a lot of pressure on yourself or feels you should be coping better. Perhaps you recognise yourself as a perfectionist, people pleaser or procrastinator, or all three! You might spend a lot of time worrying, overthinking or second-guessing yourself, struggle with confidence or self-esteem, or find relationships difficult because of trust, rejection or feeling that you are constantly having to tread carefully, wondering "is it them or me?".
Sometimes these difficulties make more sense when we look at what has happened earlier in life. Experiences in childhood and adolescence shape the ways we understand ourselves, relate to other people and respond to stress, even when we don't necessarily think of our experiences as traumatic. I have a particular interest and expertise in childhood, developmental and relational trauma, and in helping people understand how earlier experiences may still be affecting them in the present.
I offer EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), which can be particularly helpful when difficult experiences continue to feel emotionally present or are affecting how you respond in the here and now. EMDR can sometimes provide a more focused and time-efficient way of working with particular experiences than traditional talking therapy, although the pace and length of therapy will always depend on the individual person and what you want to achieve.
My approach is integrative, which means I draw on different evidence-based psychological therapies according to the person I'm working with rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach. Alongside EMDR, I may draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)-informed approaches. I tailor therapy to the individual, with the therapeutic relationship and what happens between us being central to the process.
I believe that therapy works best when we can be curious together about what is happening, without judgement. I'm interested not just in what is wrong, but in what has happened to you, how you have adapted to it, what has helped you to cope so far, and what may have become stuck. I believe people are remarkably capable of adapting to difficult experiences. I don't believe we completely break; we get stuck. Therapy can help us understand those outdated patterns or ways of coping and, bit by bit, become unstuck.
I aim to provide a genuinely accepting, neurodiversity-affirming and LGBTQIA+ affirming space where you can be yourself without needing to hide or explain who you are. Therapy doesn't have to be stiff or formal. You can come as you are, and I'm not easily shocked, and yes, swearing is absolutely okay.
My aim is to provide a warm, safe and collaborative space where we can make sense of your experiences and find ways of managing what is difficult now, while also looking towards the life you want to live. I feel privileged when people put their trust in me and allow me to walk alongside them for a while as they work towards making things different.
I am always aware that choosing to start therapy can feel like a big step. I aim to work with warmth, honesty, curiosity and respect, helping you develop a better understanding of yourself and your experiences and find a way forward that feels right for you.
