Mr Sujeewa Fernando
Consultant Urogynaecologist and General Gynaecologist

Mr Sujeewa Fernando is a highly experienced Consultant Urogynaecologist and General Gynaecologist with extensive expertise in the diagnosis and management of a wide range of women's health conditions, including pelvic floor disorders, urinary incontinence, vaginal prolapse, and general gynaecological problems.

He is a Consultant at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and works clinically at Wrexham Maelor Hospital. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr Fernando serves as the Clinical Director for the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Directorate, where he provides strategic leadership for women's health services Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

Mr Fernando has a strong commitment to medical education and training. He plays an active role in supporting the development of future specialists and contributes to postgraduate medical training, mentoring trainees and delivering national educational programmes in obstetrics and gynaecology.

At a national level, Mr Fernando holds a senior leadership role as Vice President (Workforce) of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in the United Kingdom. In this role, he contributes to national policy discussions on workforce planning, training, and service development to support the delivery of high-quality women's healthcare across the NHS.

Mr Fernando is known for providing patient-centered, evidence-based care, taking time to understand each patient's concerns and offering tailored treatment options to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Areas of interest

Urogynaecology Procedures: Vaginal prolapse repair (anterior, posterior and vault), sacrospinous fixation, colposuspension (Burch), autologous fascial sling surgery, urethral bulking injections (e.g. Bulkamid), botulinum toxin for overactive bladder, bladder instillation therapy, cystoscopy, urodynamic testing and pelvic floor assessment.

General Gynaecology Procedures: Diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy (polyp and fibroid removal), endometrial biopsy, endometrial ablation for heavy periods, laparoscopy (keyhole surgery), ovarian cyst removal, treatment of endometriosis and pelvic pain, dilatation and curettage (D&C), fibroid management, Bartholin's cyst treatment and vulval procedures.

Menopause Care: Comprehensive menopause assessment, HRT initiation and optimisation, management of menopausal symptoms, vaginal atrophy treatment and personalised long-term menopause care.
