About me

Mr Oliver Bowes is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Barking, Havering & Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust where he provides a general ophthalmology service and specialty services in corneal disease. He is the former clinical lead for cataract surgery and clinical governance lead at the Trust and is a current clinical supervisor and surgical trainer for the North London Ophthalmology deanery.

He has extensive training in refractive cataract surgery aiming to significantly reduce the dependence of spectacles after surgery. Having completed two corneal fellowships at Cambridge University Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, he undertakes all forms of modern corneal transplantation as well as corneal surface procedures, corneal collagen crosslinking and YAG laser treatments including YAG laser capsulotomy.

He qualified from University College London Medical School with Distinction in Medical Sciences in 2009 and won several academic prizes as well as a commendation for the prestigious Duke Elder Prize for Ophthalmology. He continues to be engaged in research and teaching and has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals. He frequently lectures in the UK and has run several wetlab surgical training courses for trainee surgeons.

He is recognised as a specialist with the General Medical Council (GMC) and as a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth). During his residency, he sat on College Council and was Chair of the Ophthalmologists in Training Group. He is also a member of the European and UK & Ireland Societies of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS, UKISCRS).

Outside of medicine, his two main passions are golf and skiing. He also enjoys kayaking along the English coastline.
