About me
Mr Cristian Nita qualified in medicine in 2003 from the prestigious Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Bucharest, Romania.
In the same year, he commenced specialist training in Trauma and Orthopaedics at the National Trauma and Orthopaedic Centre, achieving top marks throughout his program.
He developed a specialist interest in lower limb arthroplasty and soft tissue knee reconstruction, and in 2010 was awarded the Romanian equivalent of a UK CCT, subsequently being appointed Consultant Trauma Surgeon at Bucharest's largest Level 1 Trauma Centre.
In 2012, Mr Nita moved to the North East of England to further his expertise. He completed fellowships with Mr Nick London in Harrogate and the BOA Clinical Leaders Fellowship at Sunderland Royal Hospital with Mr Shaun O'Brien and Mr Ananda Nanu. During this time, he gained extensive experience managing a wide range of lower limb conditions, including hip and knee osteoarthritis, trauma, sports injuries, and complex deformity correction.
Mr Nita obtained his UK FRCS in 2016 and was appointed Consultant Lower Limb Surgeon at Forth Valley Royal Hospital, Scotland, before joining North Cumbria University Hospitals in 2017.
His clinical practice encompasses all aspects of knee surgery and general trauma, including hip replacements for neck of femur fractures.
A particular focus of Mr Nita's work is joint preservation and complex knee deformity correction. He is one of only two surgeons in the North of England trained to diagnose and treat complex 3D deformities around the knee joint. These advanced procedures are often combined with revision of failed ligament reconstructions and are carefully tailored to preserve the patient's native joint whenever possible. Many patients, including professional athletes, have successfully returned to their previous level of sport following complex knee surgery and closely guided rehabilitation with the Nuffield physiotherapy team. He also manages a high volume of knee ligament reconstructions, including multiligament injuries.
Mr Nita specialises in:
Degenerative knee conditions: Knee replacement surgery, including partial and complex robotic-assisted procedures
Knee preservation and deformity correction: High tibial osteotomies, distal femoral osteotomies, or combined procedures
Sports injuries and ligament reconstruction: Management of locked knees, ligament ruptures, meniscal repairs, and ACL reconstruction
He has presented at national and international conferences and contributed to multiple publications. He is principal investigator on several research projects, focusing on cartilage regeneration. Passionate about education, he regularly teaches medical students and orthopaedic trainees and serves as faculty for specialist courses.
Outside of work, Mr Nita enjoys spending time with family and friends, travelling, and exploring new cultures.
