About me
I am a consultant oncoplastic breast surgeon, a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in General & Breast Surgery, and am on the GMC specialist register. I previously trained at the Edinburgh Breast Unit under Prof Mike Dixon OBE, who is highly regarded across the world as a pioneer in the field of breast conservation, endocrine therapy and complex breast reconstruction. I undertook an oncoplastic fellowship with the outstanding firm at Frimley Park Hospital, Surrey, and I also spent time learning cosmetic breast surgery including breast augmentation, reduction and uplift (mastopexy).
I have specific training in breast implant pre-pectoral reconstruction where the implants are placed in front of the chest (pectoral) muscle; this avoids pain, discomfort and animation (movement of the implant when the muscles contract) associated with sub-pectoral (below the muscle) placement. I also have experience in the use of fat transfer (lipofilling) as a reconstructive technique and have published and presented research using this procedure to reduce the deformity caused by lumpectomy.
I am the mother of 2 young boys and am acutely aware of the busy, multi-faceted lives that women often lead. I know that a diagnosis of breast cancer doesn't just bring worry about treatment and outcomes, but also significant concerns about how this will affect the many other people and roles in our lives. As a surgeon my goal is to listen to your hopes and expectations, and to work with you and my colleagues in surgery, nursing, radiology and oncology to get the best chance of beating your cancer. With the excellent results that we have from breast cancer treatment nowadays, I want to be able to provide you with an outcome that you are satisfied with when you look in the mirror.
