About me

Dr Afzal Sohaib is a Consultant Cardiologist with a special interest in heart rhythm problems including atrial fibrillation (AF), palpitations, slow heart rates, blackouts (syncope), supraventriclar tachycardia (SVT), and ectopic beats.

He specialises in finding the right combination of treatments for these conditions by identifying the underlying causes, choosing the correct lifestyle interventions, the most suitable medication and, where required, procedures which he performs himself. He performs pacemaker and defibrillator implants, and ablation procedures for heart rhythm disturbances including AF ablation.

Some of the tests he organises for his patients include electrocardiograms (ECGs), heart monitors, and heart scans (echocardiograms, CT coronary angiography, cardiac MRI scans).

Dr Sohaib's NHS practice is at Barts Heart Centre, one of Europe's largest cardiac centres, and he is also lead for the heart rhythm service at Barking, Havering & Redbridge University Hospitals.

Dr Sohaib qualified from UCL Medical School in 2005, finishing in second place in the University of London Gold Medal Examination. He undertook cardiology training at the Hammersmith Hospital, and Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospitals prior to becoming a Consultant. He has a PhD from Imperial College funded by a prestigious clinical research training fellowship from the British Heart Foundation. He has published several articles in highly regarded scientific journals and regularly speaks at national and international cardiology meetings. He has published a book on the management of heart rhythm disorders "Decoding Cardiac Electrophysiology".

Dr Sohaib is a former President of the British Junior Cardiologists’ Association (BJCA) and served on the Council of the British Cardiovascular Society. He is involved in organising the ESC Congress, the world’s largest cardiology conference.
