About me
I work with Adults and Young People.
My name is Fiona Jarvie and I have worked in the counselling profession for 13 years now, proudly achieving a BA (hons) Degree in Counselling Studies and more recently, becoming an EMDR (Eye Movement, Desensitization and Reprocessing) Practitioner. I am an accredited member of the BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy); on their Register of Proficiency and as such I am bound by the Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy. I hold an enhanced DBS certificate, Professional Indemnity Insurance and have my own monthly clinical supervision, ensuring I am working at my best for you and keeping up to date with new training opportunities to enhance your experience.
Your counselling sessions will be held either by video or over the telephone, creating a safe space, setting the stage for you to explore, reflect and let go of what is holding you back. My initial training was Person-Centred, being truly there for the other, showing the core conditions of unconditional positive regard, congruency and empathy. Sometimes I feel that extra tools are needed, which is when I will offer you the chance to experience other approaches, or bring in some creative ideas. These therapies involve setting goals/taking action and can be motivational and fun! You are the expert and I will follow your lead.
During my time as a counsellor, I have worked in a Counselling Charity as a counsellor and an EMDR Practitioner, taking NHS referrals, self-referrals and providing counselling to victims of crime under a call-off contract with the office for the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner (OPFCC) North Yorkshire. I am an affiliate/associate counsellor for some National Employee Assistance Programmes and over the last 13 years, I also worked as a children's and young person's counsellor in Primary and Secondary schools across North Yorkshire and Redcar and Cleveland.
EMDR - Sometimes our past traumas just won't go away. They prevent us from leading a happy life, they stop us from socialising, they stop us from working and ruin relationships. Past traumatic memories can get trapped, due to our brain trying to protect us at that time. Unfortunately, they do not stay hidden forever and come back in the form of a flash back or nightmares, leading to anxiety and depression.
This therapy will help you make a connection between your past trapped painful emotions and enable you to work on them during your sessions with me, reducing the painful flash backs and nightmares.
Together, we can do this!
What can therapy help you with:
Talking therapies, like counselling, can help with many difficult life problems - from coping with traumatic experiences and events, to dealing with depression and anxiety or managing harmful emotions and behaviours. In your counselling sessions, I can help you to explore/reflect on the past; live in the present and be motivated for your future. You don't know why you feel the way you do? That's OK, you are reading this now which has already started your process!
Sometimes, we do not know we are having difficulties until it is displayed in our unhelpful and negative behaviour; this is particularly true for children and young people who often show they are struggling by behaving out of character and adopting some concerning new characteristics. Counselling can not only help by teaching coping strategies and skills, but it can actually get behind the behaviour to find out why the new unhelpful characteristics are there in the first place.
