About me

Current Position
In 2023, after 11 years as a Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist at the Royal Free Hospital, I moved to The Royal London Hospital Paediatric Gastroenterology Unit, joining a large multidisciplinary team with tremendous expertise in a wide variety of children's gastroenterological conditions.

Clinical activity and approach to care

In my clinics, I see infants, children and teenagers with a variety of gastrointestinal (GI) problems and conditions including abdominal pain, blood in stools, constipation, diarrhoea, feeding problems, food allergy, gastro-oesophageal reflux, swallowing and vomiting problems, and concerns about weight loss and poor growth due to a GI cause.

If necessary to investigate further, I carefully choose from a variety of available investigations including blood, stool and imaging tests such as ultrasound, x-ray or MRI, and may recommend the use of other tests including endoscopy as part of a diagnostic work-up to piece together the bigger picture of what is happening.

I use a holistic approach with all my patients and their families, taking into account the broad range of factors involved when someone is being investigated for or is diagnosed with a long-term gastrointestinal condition.

Background

I qualified in medicine from King's College London in 2001 along with a First in a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Pharmacology.
My post graduate training was in General Paediatrics and I specialised in Paediatric Gastroenterology having worked at several centres of excellence in London and Southampton.

Affiliations and Memberships

I'm a member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, and the British Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (BSPGHAN). Currently I am active in its Gastrointestinal (GI) Motility Working Group as well as in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) research.
I'm also a member of the the Association for Child and Adolescent Mental Health.

Other Roles

Aside from clinical responsibilities I was involved in the development of paediatric gastroenterology services and clinical research and was an active member of the Royal Free Hospital Drugs and Therapeutics Committee for many years.
I've also been involved in teaching medical students from University College London (UCL) for many years and for a time I was an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor with UCL.

Clinical Interests

My clinical interests are in paediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and GI motility disorders including constipation, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and vomiting and developing novel paediatric endoscopy services such as Transnasal endoscopy.

I see patients with food-related issues such as coeliac disease and eosinophilic oesophagitis as well as disorders of the gut-brain axis (also known as the functional gastrointestinal disorders) including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and other chronic abdominal pain problems.

Before leaving the Royal Free, I had started to use Transnasal endoscopy in adolescent patients, thereby avoiding the need for sedation or general anaesthetic.
