About me
Shirah Herman is an Accredited Counsellor with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. She is a Systemic Practitioner, having trained at the Tavistock Clinic. She has studied to Masters Level in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and is a member of the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy.
Shirah is trained in the treatment of trauma and carries out extensive assessment in treating trauma using EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) and she is passionately committed to helping clients alleviate symptoms so as to live their lives as peacefully as possible. She adopts a client centred approach drawing from Mindfulness training and uses imaginative and creative methods such as imagery, to combine traditional therapeutic approaches, such as CBT and Psychodynamic, with the creative part of an individual’s talents.
Shirah has an in-depth understanding of mental health issues and her specialisms include helping and supporting individuals in areas, amongst others, that include anxiety, OCD, depression, addiction, the effects of abuse, sexual difficulties and the impact of health problems. She has spent many years working on the use of imagery, creativity and mindfulness to help with self-soothing and resilience.
Shirah has managed a busy School Counselling Service in a large London comprehensive school and has extensive experience of working with adolescents. She has been engaged in organisational Critical Events involving complex issues and policy formulation.
She has a special interest in Aviation Psychology, specialising in working with crew. Her years of doing shift work in a disciplined and critical environment have given her an insight into the pressures that crew face. She is also interested in the challenges the armed forces personnel and emergency services have to endure in their work and the impact this may have on their mental well-being.
Her philosophy is that every experience can be an opportunity for personal growth and her response is to help build the strength to go on. She adopts a holistic approach to therapy within the Ethical Framework of Counselling and sound practice
