About me
I have been practising as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon since 2011, specialising in Hand, Wrist and Elbow Surgery. I also have a keen interest in Trauma, treating fractures and soft tissue injuries of the upper limb, including sports injuries.
I completed my specialist training in Trauma and Orthopaedics in Nottingham. To further my training in Hand Surgery, I undertook Fellowships at the renowned Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby and the Hand and Peripheral Nerve Unit at the Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, Australia. During my fellowships, I gained a vast amount of experience in treating complex hand and wrist pathology, including major injuries in these tertiary specialist centres.
Hand, wrist and elbow surgery constitute the majority of my elective practice. I tailor my treatment modalities based on the individual patient's needs and wishes after a thorough discussion. The treatment options I offer range from minimally invasive and keyhole operations to major reconstructive procedures. For example, in Dupuytren's contracture, I perform a range of procedures from Collagenase injections to revision operations with skin graft, while in arthritis, treatment ranges from simple injections to joint replacement surgery.
I also treat most orthopaedic injuries as part of my general trauma practice. In addition, I accept referrals from colleagues for the more complex hand and wrist trauma, including sports injuries that require specialist treatment.
I am clinical lead for Trauma and Orthopaedics in South Tyneside Hospital.
In addition to my clinical work, I have a keen interest in research and I am a member of the Research Committee of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH). My research interests include hand and wrist osteoarthritis and trauma and I have several publications in peer reviewed journals in the field of hand surgery. I am also an editorial reviewer for the Journal of Hand Surgery.
I have an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering (University of Cardiff) with a specialist thesis in Thumb Biomechanics.
I am on the faculty for National and Regional FRCS (Orth) courses and I teach on the regional orthopaedic specialty training programme. I organise and run teaching sessions for A&E clinicians, therapists and GPs with special interest in musculoskeletal conditions.
