About me

Dr Alan Fayaz is a highly regarded consultant in Pain Medicine, Anaesthesia, and Perioperative Care at University College London Hospitals (UCLH). He offers specialist expertise in managing a wide spectrum of complex pain conditions, including neuropathic pain, spinal and musculoskeletal pain, pain associated with neurological disease, and chronic generalised pain syndromes. He also has a clinical interest in the emerging role of cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMPs) in pain management.

Dr Fayaz began his medical training at the University of Cambridge, studying preclinical medicine, before completing his clinical studies at Imperial College London. Throughout his training, he demonstrated exceptional academic performance. He was awarded the Nuffield Gold Medal by the Royal College of Anaesthetists for achieving the highest mark in the primary FRCA examination. In 2012, he earned the Faculty of Pain Medicine Examination Prize for achieving the top score nationally in the FFPMRCA examination.

In 2017, Dr Fayaz completed his Doctorate in Medical Research (MD Res) at Imperial College London, focusing on pain epidemiology. His landmark study on the prevalence of chronic pain phenotypes in the UK, published in the British Medical Journal, has been cited over 850 times and ranks in the top 5% of all research outputs worldwide by Altmetric score - reflecting its clinical and societal impact.

Dr Fayaz is an Honorary Associate Professor at University College London (UCL) and leads the Pain Education Research Centre (PERC@UCLH). His current research focuses on:

Perioperative care for patients with chronic pain

Novel and advanced treatments for neuropathic pain

The therapeutic potential of medical cannabis in pain management

Beyond his research and clinical practice, Dr Fayaz plays a pivotal role in pain education and public engagement. He currently serves as Acting Chair of the Communications Committee and Media Liaison for the British Pain Society, where he leads initiatives to raise public awareness of chronic pain and foster collaboration between healthcare professionals and patients.

Dr Fayaz is deeply involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. He is an advocate for Essentials of Pain Management (EPM) training - a global education initiative supported by the Faculty of Pain Medicine and Mercy Ships. He has helped deliver EPM training to healthcare professionals in Africa and across the UK. He currently serves as the Regional Lead for EPM in London, championing accessible pain education for junior doctors and medical students.
