About me
I have worked as a counsellor/psychotherapist for thirty years in a number of settings so have an extensive and broad range of experience. As well as working in private practice I have been a Counsellor for Leeds MIND ( a mental health charity) in their Counselling & Therapy Service seeing clients referred by GP's, Psychiatrists and employers. I have provided counselling based at a GP surgery when working as an affiliate Counsellor with Oakdale Centre ( a psychological therapy service in Harrogate). Going further back I trained as a volunteer for The Samaritans, the telephone crisis charity and was a visitor for a victim support scheme. Currently I am an associate Counsellor with a number of companies providing Employee Assistance Programmes or EAP services. These include Workplace Options Global and the CMCS.
I qualified as a Counsellor in 1998 and was accredited by the BACP in 2005. I also hold a BSc (Hons) Psychology. I have an enhanced DBS, certificate number 001621241801 and am registered with the ICO and therefore GDPR compliant.
I receive regular supervision in line with guidelines set out by the BACP and I work within their Ethical Framework for Counselling Professions.
Areas of interest
I work with adult individuals age 18+. My core model is Relational which is an integrative approach drawing on person centered and psychodynamic models. The client-counsellor relationship is central and used to gain insight into how an individual relates to; Self, Others and the World.
I aim to provide a safe and secure space where our conversation leads to the resolution of whatever difficulties are being experienced. I may also offer to teach coping strategies, like mindfulness, where appropriate. I endeavor to be collaborative non-judgemental, empathic and genuine.
I have experience and interest in many areas including:
Anger: management and cause.
Loss: through bereavement, divorce/separation, illhealth.
Depression & Anxiety: reactive, long term and generalised/non specific.
Stress: this may be work/relationship specific or connected to feelings about where life is/isn't going.
Abuse: physical, emotional and/or sexual.
Identity: sexual,gender.
