About me

Mr. Parratt is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon practising at the Oaks Hospital and Colchester General Hospital (CGH). His specialist interest is in hip and knee surgery, particularly hip and knee replacement/revision replacement and soft tissue knee reconstruction, including meniscal and cartilage surgery.
He qualified with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 2003. Junior doctor posts led to a wide and varied experience including working at the Royal London Hospital and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH). He experienced work in Scotland, England and New Zealand during this period. Subsequently, he was awarded a research fellowship, specifically looking into cartilage injury and regeneration and musculoskeletal cancers. His interest in cartilage regeneration procedures stems from this research.
Mr. Parratt was then selected to train on the world renowned Stanmore training rotation, based from the RNOH. He gained a huge amount of expertise, both in district general hospitals and tertiary referral centres. He ended his rotation with two years at the RNOH, honing his skills in hip and knee surgery. He was awarded a fellowship in hip and knee reconstruction (under the tutelage of Professor Tim Briggs and Mr. Richard Carrington) at the RNOH prior to taking up his post in Colchester.
Mr. Parratt has a keen interest in developing services allied to operative orthopaedics. He is the Unit Training Director at CGH, involved in the training of younger doctors. He is also a board member of the iconic Iceni Centre at the Hospital. Furthermore, Mr. Parratt is the lead for the enhanced recovery programme at CGH. This is designed to integrate patients into their own care, such that they are fully informed and prepared for their upcoming surgery, in an effort to maximise recuperation.
Aside from the day to day job, Mr. Parratt enjoys spending time with his family, along with following all sports, particularly rugby, having played the game to international level as a youth. His knowledge of sports injuries comes from firsthand experience!

Areas of interest

Mr. Parratt treats patients over a large age range. In patients suffering from osteoarthritis, he performs total hip and knee replacements, including patient specific implants. He also performs partial knee replacements, specifically, unicompartmental knee replacement (UKR) and patello-femoral joint replacement (PFJR).
In addition to primary joint replacement, he also performs revision hip and knee replacement. This entails removing existing implants and reconstructing the joint with new ones. His experience at the RNOH has led him to develop expertise in massive replacement of bone (endoprosthetic replacement).
Furthermore, he specialises in knee injuries/sports injuries. He performs anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, patello-femoral stabilising procedures (medial patello-femoral ligament reconstructio and tibial tubercle osteotomy), meniscal surgery (including repair) and cartilage regeneration procedures.
