About me

Stephen qualified from Liverpool University in 1983 and spent a period in Liverpool undertaking a general medical rotation. He then trained in oncology in Cardiff and Cambridge becoming a consultant in Bristol in 1994.

He has sessional commitments to Southmead Hospital Bristol and attends the Taunton Nuffield hospital. His major clinical interest is gastro-intestinal cancer (oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, colo-rectal). A further interest in lung cancer and clinical research was stimulated as a MRC Clinical Scientist in Norman Bleehens’ unit in Cambridge where the MRC cancer trials unit was situated at the time. A MD related to lung cancer and scheduling of topoisomerase poisons with and without radiation is the basis of on-going interest in chemo-radiation interactions. He has a major interest in research and where possible all patients who are referred will be offered an appropriate clinical trial.

Unitl recently a challenging clinical load has seen up to 1000 new patients with cancer annually, but now is spending more time as clinical lead for the trials unit within the Bristol Haematology and Oncology centre and for the National Cancer Research Network locally in Avon Somerset and Wiltshire. Stephen is Clinical director of the Western Comprehensive Local Research network whose job is to fund the NHS costs of delivering research activity in the NHS. He is also a member of the NCRI upper GI studies group, and chairs the pancreatic sub group

He is a member of the editorial board of the journal Clinical Oncology, and an author in more than 50 publications and has recently written a book aimed at patients and their families with lung cancer: Lung Cancer: The facts, published in November 2009 and endorsed by the Roy Castle Foundation
