About me
Mr Gianluca Lucchese was appointed consultant cardiac surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in 2015. Before his recruitment to London, Gianluca has had a comprehensive training in cardiac surgery in Italy and UK, including congenital cardiac, heart transplant and mechanical circulatory support. He has a particular expertise in complex and repeat combined heart procedures, complete arterial coronary bypass surgery, mitral and aortic valve repair surgery and complex thoracic aortic surgery with particular interest in the valve-sparing aortic root replacement. Mr Lucchese is a renowned expert in minimally invasive cardiac surgery (key-hole surgery), which is a consistent part of his surgical practice, and trans-catheter valve implantation (such as surgical TAVI, trans-apical TMVI and hybrid cardiac procedures). His focus has always been to provide an individualised approach to the patient in order to offer the best long-term benefits minimising the surgical trauma, particularly important in terms of patient’s experience and outcome. In this regard, he has been leading quality improvement projects on infection prevention and frailty in cardiac surgery. Mr Lucchese has published more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and is associate and review editor of several journals and meetings. His research interests focus on the biochemical pathways of myocardial hypertrophy and myocardial protection, the hemodynamic properties of the aortic root (valve-sparing aortic root replacement, Ross operation) and the treatment of valvular heart disease with particular attention to the isolated tricuspid valve dysfunction. As an expert in his field, he is regularly invited to speak at national and international scientific meetings.
