About me
I trained in Ophthalmology at Addenbrooke's Hospital (Cambridge) and at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (Norwich). I have completed two internationally renowned glaucoma fellowships at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, Norwich, UK, and at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, Melbourne, Australia. During these fellowships I was trained in the medical and surgical management of glaucoma patients including complex cataract and glaucoma surgery. I was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital in 2013.
I specialise in small-incision cataract surgery to improve vision and reduce the requirement for glasses post-operatively. I perform complex glaucoma surgery (trabeculectomy with anti-wound healing augmentation, trabeculectomy bleb revision, and glaucoma drainage device implantation) and also specialise in minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (non-penetrating glaucoma surgery, and iStent and Xen implantation). I have extensive experience in laser procedures for glaucoma, such as laser peripheral iridotomy, laser iridoplasty, selective laser trabeculoplasty and diode laser cyclophotocoagulation.
I have performed over 3000 cataract operations and over 1400 glaucoma procedures over my 15 year career in Ophthalmology. My complication rate is much lower than the published national average.
I hold the post of Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Norwich Medical School (University of East Anglia). I am the lead for Ophthalmology undergraduate training at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.
I have an interest in both clinical and laboratory glaucoma research. I was awarded my research degree (Doctorate of Medicine MD) for developing a human organotypic retinal culture model for glaucoma research, a model that is successfully used at the University of East Anglia and University of Cambridge.
I have been involved with charity work in Ethiopia and China, training doctors and other health professionals in eye treatment and surgery.
