About me
Mr Steve Hornby is a Consultant Upper Gastrointestinal (Upper GI) and General Surgeon with specialist expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the oesophagus, stomach, gallbladder, abdominal wall, and upper digestive system.
He is based in Gloucestershire, where he works as a Consultant Surgeon and Clinical Lead for Upper GI Surgery. He has extensive experience in both benign and cancer surgery, providing care for patients with conditions such as gallstones, acid reflux, hiatus hernia, swallowing disorders, abdominal wall hernias, and cancers of the oesophagus and stomach.
Mr Hornby is recognised for his expertise in minimally invasive and robotic surgery. He is a leading robotic surgeons and has played a key role in the development and adoption of robotic surgical techniques within the NHS. His practice focuses on achieving excellent clinical outcomes while supporting faster recovery, reduced postoperative pain, and shorter hospital stays wherever appropriate.
After graduating from Nottingham Medical School, Mr Hornby completed higher surgical training in the South West of England before undertaking advanced fellowship training in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery at the internationally renowned Austin Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. He has also undertaken specialist training and observerships in leading centres across the world.
Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Hornby is actively involved in surgical education, research, and leadership. He has held national leadership roles within surgical training organisations and regularly teaches surgeons in advanced laparoscopic and robotic techniques.
He is a recognised trainer and proctor in robotic surgery and contributes to the development of future surgical services both regionally and nationally.
Mr Hornby believes in providing clear explanations, evidence-based treatment, and genuinely personalised care.
He understands that undergoing investigations or surgery can be an anxious time for patients and aims to ensure that every patient feels informed, supported, and involved in decisions about their treatment.
Mr Hornby sees both insured and self-funding patients and offers rapid access to assessment, investigation, and treatment.
