About me

Thank you for reading my profile. As a qualified and accredited Counsellor/Psychotherapist I understand how important it is for people to feel comfortable enough to talk through their difficulties. I am a Person-Centred practitioner and clinical supervisor and have many years of experience working with adults, teenagers/adolescents as well as couples and families/work. I work from home in a room that is a therapeutic, private space for clients to explore their personal experiences. I have regular supervision to ensure best practice.

Experience

I have a great deal of experience working with adults of all ages, and young people, adapting my approach for younger clients using creative approaches to help them explore their feelings. I also work with couples who are experiencing difficulties within their relationship. Relationship counselling focuses on helping couples communicate their experiences and feelings, and work together to resolve issues between them.
My experience includes the following areas; bereavement; relationship difficulties; anxiety and depression; low self esteem and confidence; work problems; stress; post-natal depression; historical and sexual abuse; health problems; domestic violence; anger management, rape & trauma. I have worked in the voluntary sector, working for Derbyshire Rape Crisis, Cruse Bereavement Care and Hadhari Nari Project supporting women experiencing domestic violence.

Couples/Relationship/Family Counselling

We all experience difficulty in our relationships throughout our lives; work stresses and strains, differences in parenting style, blended families (step parents/children, adoption), financial problems, differing ambitions and expectations, illness, sexual issues, children's behaviour, exam stress - these are a few of the issues that can put a strain on relationships. Partners and family members will all have differing coping styles including; talking things through, withdrawing, becoming down, anxious or angry. It can feel almost impossible to work through our relationship difficulties when our styles of coping clash and our needs feel so different. My work in this area focuses on creating an environment where you can talk openly and honestly with each other. It encourages more effective communication and an opportunity to explore problems and find ways of understanding each other and moving forwards. My training in this work is also Person-Centred and encompasses the same philosophy although I draw on other approaches to help people understand barriers to communication and to make sense of their relational dynamics.
Working with teenagers and adolescents

I work creatively, using tools and techniques relevant to adolescent development. Adults often feel awkward at embarking on an important conversation with a teenager, particularly in light of the often monosyllabic or grunting responses to their very best efforts. The research shows that for many teenagers, a sense of real connectedness with just one adult in their lives is enough to end their sense of aloneness, anger, feelings of being misunderstood.

General Anxiety Disorder

I work with clients; helping them to understand the cause of their anxiety and the symptoms it presents. People can feel frightened and overwhelmed when they experience an episode of anxiety, and struggle to make sense of it. I help my clients to manage these symptoms by developing new skills and techniques to move forward with their day to day life.
