About me

Mr Mike Kent is a fellowship trained Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with special interests in primary and revision hip replacement, hip trauma surgery and primary knee replacement.

He qualified as a doctor from Guy’s King’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals Medical School in 2004 and completed basic surgical training in Australia and on the south coast before being appointed to the Wessex higher training scheme in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in 2007. He achieved Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2013 and completed a postgraduate MSc in Trauma Surgery at the University of Swansea in 2013.

Mike undertook fellowship training in primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty in Perth, Western Australia and Southampton, UK.

He worked as a substantive consultant at Torbay Hospital in Devon for 5 years (a national centre for ambulatory surgery) before relocating back to Wessex in 2021 to work at:
- University Hospitals Dorset,
- BMI The Harbour Hospital, Poole,
- Nuffield Health, Bournemouth
- Bournemouth Private Clinic

Mike has personally performed over 1000 joint replacements as a consultant and was a highly rated trainer in the Peninsula Deanery.

He is a strong believer in enhanced recovery principles, enabling patients to safely mobilise more quickly after trauma and joint replacement surgery and get back to function sooner. He has pioneered a popular and successful pathway for day case joint replacements and was the first surgeon in the South West to successfully undertake a day case hip replacement in September 2018.

He has been an invited speaker and faculty member at international ambulatory surgery meetings, and in 2019 he and his team won an international award for the design and implementation of their successful day case hip pathway. Mike was selected to co-lead a Devon STP steering group on enhanced recovery after hip and knee replacement

Mike has published several research papers in his fields of interest, including enhanced recovery after joint replacement and service improvement in trauma, and continues to present at international conferences and webinars.

Mike is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association, British Hip Society and Orthopaedic Trauma Society.
