About me
Mr R Venkataraman Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon
I trained in medicine and completed my postgraduate degree in orthopaedics at the Christian Medical College and Hospital in Vellore, India, a highly respected teaching institution. I began my career in orthopaedics and trauma there in 2000, working as both a consultant and assistant professor.
About 20 years ago, I moved to the UK to further specialise in hip and knee replacement surgery. I completed additional training in trauma and orthopaedics in the North East of England, gaining broad experience in all areas of orthopaedic care.
I went on to undertake advanced fellowship training in hip and knee joint replacement surgery at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital in Glasgow, a high-volume centre. I was also selected as a British Orthopaedic Association Travelling Fellow in trauma, which gave me the opportunity to complete further specialist training at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Since 2017, I have been working as a consultant at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust. My main areas of practice are hip and knee replacements (including revision surgery) and trauma care.
Alongside my clinical work, I am actively involved in teaching and training. I am an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Leicester and lead undergraduate orthopaedic teaching for medical students. I am also involved in national recruitment into orthopaedic training and am a recognised instructor for trauma courses, including Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
I also have a strong interest in maintaining high standards of patient care. As a clinical governance lead, I focus on patient safety, learning from incidents, and improving quality. In addition, I am involved in research, audit, and quality improvement work, with presentations and publications at both national and international level.
Areas of interest
Hip replacement surgery (primary and revision); Knee replacement surgery (primary and revision); Arthroscopy of the knee excluding soft tissue reconstructive procedures.
