About me
Dhanwant Gomez (Dhanny) is a Consultant Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) and General Surgeon at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. He is also an Honorary Professor of HPB Surgical Sciences at the University of Nottingham. He graduated from the Leeds University School of Medicine in 2002 and gained Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2011. His surgical experience includes training in Leeds, Nottingham, and Liverpool.
He has a long track record and significant expertise in day-case laparoscopic procedures, such as gallbladder surgery and hernia repair. Regarding hernia surgery, he also repairs recurrent hernias and offers both open and laparoscopic techniques. The majority of his gallbladder operations are performed laparoscopically as day-case procedures, with excellent patient satisfaction. This is reflected in patient reviews and hospital appraisals. He prides himself on taking a personal approach with his patients and prioritises clinical safety and good governance. He has excellent clinical outcomes, with both low complication and re-admission rates.
In addition to day-case surgery, he also performs complex liver, biliary, and pancreas procedures. Dhanwant also offers second opinions for cancer cases and has experience repairing bile duct injuries following gallbladder surgery. His clinical outcomes are consistently excellent, with low complication rates.
Dhanny has significant experience in clinical leadership at regional, national, and international levels. He is currently the Clinical Lead for Neuroendocrine Tumours and HPB Undergraduate Teaching Lead at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. Nationally, he serves as the Honorary Secretary of the Great Britain and Ireland HPB Association (GBIHPBA) and as a steering committee member of Cholangiocarcinoma UK. Internationally, he is a member of the Scientific Programme Committee of the European-African HPB Association and the Inclusive Excellence Working Group of the International HPB Association. Previously, he was the HPB Cancer and Governance Lead, Chair of the East Midlands HPB Expert Committee Advisory Group, and the East Midlands representative for the British Association of Surgical Oncology (BASO).
Dhanny has published extensively, having written more than 100 peer-reviewed academic papers and book chapters. He earned a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree for his research on liver regeneration. He is actively involved in national and international clinical studies and is regularly invited to speak at scientific conferences. Besides his ongoing research into liver and pancreas cancer, he is also engaged in surgical innovation and the development of medical devices. He has successfully obtained research funding from the Medical Research Council (MRC) and UKRI Cross Research Council.
He also has substantial experience in surgical training. In addition to training junior surgeons, he helped establish a successful HPB Fellowship programme in Nottingham, which has produced consultants working both nationally and internationally. He is involved in postgraduate education, including liver surgery masterclasses.
Outside of medicine, he is a keen footballer and currently represents the British Medical Football Team. He is also a dedicated supporter of Tottenham Hotspur.
