About me
I enjoy being a dedicated hand and wrist surgery orthopaedic consultant at Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust in Yorkshire, and privately at Spire. I provide a specialist service solely in hand and wrist surgery. Every year I perform more than 500 hand and wrist operations.
I remain passionate and committed to my specialism, and keep up to date with current procedures and evidence at national and international conferences.
My training background started after qualifying in 2004 from the University of Leicester. I then completed both my membership (MRCS, 2007) and fellowship (FRCS, 2013) exams with the Royal College of Surgeons, and an MSc (2011) in orthopaedic surgery (University of Warwick).
In 2012 I was awarded an educational bursary award by The Royal College of Surgeons of England. In 2014-15, I completed one of 11 nationally competitive advanced training programme hand and wrist surgery fellowships in Manchester, which are recognised by the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) as the best hand surgery training programmes. I worked for three highly experienced hand and wrist surgery orthopaedic and plastic surgery consultants, one of whom was the president of the BSSH at that time.
I regularly attend the British Hand Society scientific meetings, and remain committed and active with research and audit in hand and wrist surgery techniques. My last systematic review of the evidence for surgical treatment of STT joint wrist arthritis was published in The Journal of Hand Surgery (AP volume) in October 2017, and I presented this evidence at the BSSH scientific meeting in Bath in 2015. I presented my audit work comparing our hand trauma service with the British Hand Society guidelines at the scientific meeting in 2013.
In addition, I remain active in teaching and mentoring in hand and wrist surgery, and am part of the teaching faculty at the Wrightington and Harrogate FRCS exam upper limb courses.
