About me

I trained in Hepatology and Gastroenterology in the North East of England and have been a Consultant Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist in the Royal Liverpool University Hospital since 2012. I obtained my basic medical qualifications in India and received the Pfizer Gold Medal in Medicine at graduation. I spent three years in the Liver Transplant Unit at the Freeman Hospital and was awarded one of 60 scholarships in Europe to attend the prestigious Hesperis Course in Organ Transplantation organised by the European Society of Organ Transplantation.

I lead the peri-transplant, complex portal hypertension, fatty liver and autoimmune liver service at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, which is the tertiary referral centre for Mersey and North Wales. I have a passion for collaborative working and innovation and have set up the virtual liver service at the Royal Liverpool Hospital.

I provide a high quality upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy service in the Royal - both diagnostic and therapeutic including complex portal hypertension endoscopy intervention. I see both general gastroenterology and hepatology patients privately.

My clinical and research interests include autoimmune and fatty liver disease, complications of portal hypertension and liver transplantation. I have published highly cited research in peer reviewed journals on autoimmune cholestatic liver disease, portal hypertension and hepatocellular cancer risk in NAFLD. I have contributed to 2 text books in Hepatology. I was a BBSRC funded clinical research fellow exploring the role of the liver in the bio-transformation of folic acid, an important dietary vitamin, at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Results of this research have significant implications for folate supplemention of food in the UK.

I am a current member of the BSG National cholestatic liver disease guideline development group.

I have a keen interest in medical education and am the education lead for the Gastroenterology Directorate at the Royal Liverpool Hospital and Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Liverpool.

I specialise in Gastroenterology with a specific interest in Hepatology and I am JAG accredited for diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. In addition to my clinical work I am also proud to be a Honorary Lecturer at the University of Liverpool
