About me

I am a Consultant Cardiologist at Wythenshawe Hospital and Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Manchester. I see private patients at The Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle.

I have over 20 years' experience as a doctor and nearly a decade as a Consultant Cardiologist. I assess and treat people with a wide range of heart-related symptoms, including breathlessness, chest pain, palpitations, dizziness, and blackouts. I frequently see older adults with heart conditions and have extensive experience in reviewing and simplifying medications, with a strong focus on improving symptoms, wellbeing, and quality of life.

I have particular expertise in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), a common but often under-recognised condition that can cause breathlessness, ankle swelling, and fatigue. I specialise in identifying this condition accurately and helping patients manage symptoms effectively.

I also specialise in heart diagnostics and am an expert in cardiac MRI scanning. Cardiac MRI provides detailed assessment of heart structure, function, and tissue health, and is often helpful when other tests have not identified the cause of symptoms.

I graduated in Medicine with Honours from the University of Manchester in 2003 and also completed a first-class degree in Physiology. My specialist cardiology training included posts at leading centres such as the Royal Brompton Hospital, London, and the National Institutes of Health in the United States.

Alongside my clinical work, I lead a large research team focused on improving the understanding, early detection, and treatment of heart conditions. This work helps ensure that my clinical practice reflects the latest evidence and advances in cardiology. I have published widely in international medical journals and regularly speak at national and international meetings. I am also closely involved in training future cardiologists and medical students.
