About me

Mr Wiqqas Jamil is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in all aspects of knee surgery and also primary hip replacement. Wiqqas’s NHS practice is based at Tameside General Hospital.

Wiqqas ‘s knee practice covers all aspects of knee surgery, from sports injuries to arthritis of the knee. He commonly performs arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery, cruciate ligament reconstruction and both total and partial knee replacements. His specialist areas of interest include cruciate ligament injuries and other sports-related trauma including cartilage injuries and osteochondral defect resurfacing.

Having grown up in Manchester and attending Bolton School, Wiqqas studied medicine at The University of Leeds from which he graduated in 2002, having excelled academically and in sporting activities as Rugby 1st XV and Cricket Captain. He completed his higher surgical training within the prestigious NorthWest Orthopaedic training programme.

Prior to starting his Consultant practise Wiqqas completed regional, national and international fellowships in knee surgery, becoming a specialist in this field. He was a was recipient of the British Orthopaedic Foundation Traveling Fellowship for his international fellowship which was completed in Australia at 2 prestigious sports medicine clinics in Sydney and Brisbane, treating, amongst other things, injuries in elite and professional athletes.

Throughout his career, Wiqqas has regularly been involved in research, audit and teaching. He has presented his research in publications and at national and international meetings. He is an Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) instructor and University PBL Tutor. During his career, he has published numerous peer reviewed research articles and continues his interest in research. This includes collaborations with the Universities of Manchester and Salford.


Wiqqas is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, a member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee, the British Orthopaedic Association, AO Trauma Europe, European Society Sports Traumatology Knee Surgery And Arthroscopy and the NorthWest Orthopaedic Association.


His continuous drive to improve patient care has resulted in Wiqqas has receiving numerous awards and scholarships throughout his training including:
BOA Adult Knees- Traveling Fellowship Award, 2014, Translational Imaging Unit Research Grant, Manchester University 2009; Gait Laboratory Research Grant, University of Salford 2009; Bluespier Prize awarded by NWOA, (Inaugural winner), 2009, Dora Ratcliffe Award, 2001.

With his philosophy of centring care on each patient as an individual, Wiqqas ensures that his surgical practice is delivered to an exceptionally high standard. He is passionate about the NHS and is involved in a number of quality improvement projects at Tameside, helping to deliver the highest possible level of care for the Tameside & Glossop population. He has an active interest in improving the recovery of patients and specifically accelerated recovery after knee & hip replacement surgery.
