About me
Dr. Kumar specialises in the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of musculoskeletal injuries. He treats adolescents and adults with problems with any of their joints, bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, soft tissues, spinal discs and nerves. He provides unbiased honest information and recommendations, including for those patients seeking second opinions, or unsure of whether they require surgery or whether other non-surgical treatments can help them instead.
Dr Kumar has over 20 years of experience treating NHS, military and private patients, as well as elite sportsmen and women of all abilities and ages. Using his unique breadth of training and postgraduate qualifications in surgery, orthopaedics, rheumatology, general medicine, and high performance Sports Medicine, he undertakes in-depth clinical evaluation to identify the root causes of problems, and formulates bespoke holistic management plans that consistently help his patients achieve their goals.
He sees a large number of patients with injuries or pain relating to exercise, work, accidents, falls, and sport - commonly football, rugby, cricket, marathons, triathlon, tennis, rowing, hockey, ballet, golf, hiking, gym and CrossFit. He uses his skills, experience and network from working within elite sports and world-class orthopaedic and injury centres, to provide high level care to all his patients of all levels of ability.
As an educationalist, having designed, established and taught on successful degree programs in Sports Medicine Exercise and Health at University College London, he ensures all his patients acquire a good understanding of their diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation plan to enable optimum recovery.
Dr. Kumar uses diagnostic ultrasound in clinic to examine the structure and function of relevant anatomy. He has rapid access to all other necessary diagnostic modalities and advanced imaging, and goes through the images and relevant anatomy with his patents in detail.
He is highly experienced and skilled in using a variety of injection therapies and performing minimally invasive procedures to the musculoskeletal system, including spinal, joint and soft tissue injections. He uses real time ultrasound or x-ray image guidance to ensure safe, targeted procedures to help expedite recovery from injuries or pain. Injectates commonly used include steroid, platelet rich plasma (PRP), prolotherapy, Hyaluronic acid and Arthrosamid. He also provides shockwave therapy for painful tendons and ligaments, and radiofrequency denervation for spine and joint pain.
He has extensive expertise treating challenging conditions relating to tendinopathy, chronic pain, concussion, complex and recurrent sports injuries, and youth and adolescent athletes, and has published in these fields. He has led the National Tendinopathy Centre for clinical and research excellence; delivered a multidisciplinary concussion service; and was awarded a British Association of Sport & Exercise Medicine Fellowship that took him to Centre's of Excellence at Harvard in the USA and the University of Toronto and McMaster University in Canada, to study Sport & Exercise Medicine for children and adolescents.
Dr Kumar is Consultant Physician to Reading Football Club, the DP World Golf Tour and the English National Ballet School. His previous specialist positions include with West Ham United Football Club, The English Football Association, AFC Wimbledon, Saracens Rugby, The English Cricket Board, British Athletics, The London Marathon and Triathlon, England Hockey, The British Olympic Association, The English Institute for Sport, University College Hospital London NHS, Central London Community Health NHS Trust, the Ministry of Defence, and Aspetar - Qatar Athlete Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Hospital.
