About me
Professor Jamie Murphy completed his medical school training at the University of St. Andrews, Harvard University and St. John's College, Cambridge. After qualification, he undertook his Higher General Surgical Training at the Royal London Hospital and was awarded a PhD in Colorectal Molecular Oncology.
Following completion of General Surgery training, Professor Murphy embarked upon three Colorectal Surgery fellowships for highly specialist training in: 1) total pelvic exenteration / sacrectomy +/- intraoperative radiotherapy for complex pelvic cancers; 2) the use of heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for recurrent abdominal cancers; and, 3) advanced minimally invasive colorectal surgery.
After his highly specialist training, Professor Murphy was first appointed as Assistant Professor of Colorectal Surgery at Mayo Clinic in the United States for a year, prior to his return to London as a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Imperial College, and more recently as Professor of Surgery at Cleveland Clinic London. Professor Murphy is also Honorary Professor at Bart's Cancer Institute Queen Mary University of London, in addition to being Visiting Professor at Imperial College London.
Professor Murphy's specialist clinical and academic interests centre upon the treatment of bowel cancers that require advanced therapies due to their extent or complexity. As such, he has been responsible for the establishment of both an advanced / recurrent pelvic cancer service, in addition to a heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) service for recurrent bowel cancer, at Imperial College and at Cleveland Clinic London. Professor Murphy has also conducted research using intra-operative radiotherapy or pressurised intraperitoneal aerosolised chemotherapy for bowel cancer patients who have tumours that cannot be treated by conventional means.
Professor Murphy has contributed to numerous surgical textbooks and published extensively in surgical journals. In addition, he has lectured worldwide on the subjects of advanced minimally invasive colorectal surgery and complex cancer, particularly in the USA where he has served as a faculty member for many of the American national surgical conferences.
Professor Murphy is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM), a Fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), a member of the Society for American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), a member of the International Society of Surgery and is the President of the International Society of Digestive Surgery.
