About me
Dr Bhashkar Mukherjee completed medical and postgraduate studies at Cambridge University where he obtained his PHD in Functional Neuroimaging as part of the prestigious MB/PhD programme. Dr Mukherjee completed higher specialist medical and respiratory training at leading London centres for thoracic medicine including Royal Brompton Hospital, Hammersmith Hospital, Guy's & St Thomas' Hospital and King's College Hospital.
Dr Bhashkar Mukherjee is on the UK Specialist Register (GMC) in General Medicine and Respiratory Medicine. He is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians, London.
He is a Consultant Physician in Respiratory and General (Internal) Medicine at Guy's & St Thomas' Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) and at the Royal Brompton Hospital (RBH). His private practice is at London Bridge Hospital, Blackheath Hospital and the London Clinic where he sees all types of adult respiratory patients. His specialist medical interests centre around complex cardiorespiratory disorders.
At the Royal Brompton National Pulmonary Hypertension Service, he sees regional referrals for patients with Pulmonary Hypertension (PH).
At Guy's and St Thomas', as well as practicing general internal and general respiratory medicine, he is part of a nationally commissioned centre for Interstitial Lung Disease. This is a tertiary referral centre for diagnosing and treating pulmonary fibrotic disorders. He is active in clinical research involving early diagnosis and treatment of such patients.
At St Thomas' Hospital, he is a key member of the GSTT Pulmonary Embolism Reperfusion Therapy (PERT) team, which is a multidisciplinary team co-ordinating the expertise of respiratory, haematology, interventional radiology, critical care and surgical specialities to offer pioneering interventional treatments for patients with higher risk pulmonary embolic disease. This is a growing area of expertise, increasingly offering a regional service to hospitals admitting these acutely unwell patients.
Dr Mukherjee also sees referrals for the investigation of undiagnosed complex breathing disorders. He leads the Guy's and St Thomas' Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET) service. This is a diagnostic service to investigate the physiological basis of exercise limitation in patients. It is also a well-recognised tool for stratifying risk for patients needing surgery and an excellent tool for investigating multifactorial breathlessness.
Dr Mukherjee has experience in the management of critically unwell patients as well as patients with common medical and respiratory conditions and those with chronic disease. He is part of the critical care team at St Thomas' Hospital, working in the High Dependency Unit. He has previously set up Pleural Disease and Sleep Ventilation Disorder Services as well as established a Respiratory High Dependency Unit at Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) and is well-versed with Non-invasive Ventilation, CPAP, pleural interventions and the use of Fibre-optic Flexible Bronchoscopy.
As part of his general medical and respiratory work, Dr Mukherjee is experienced with Airways diseases including Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Airways Disease, and infections including tuberculosis .
Dr Mukherjee has active research interests in interstitial lung disease (ILD) and pulmonary hypertension. His recent publications have encompassed these fields and management of covid-related ILD. He is currently supervising clinical research fellows in ILD and pleural disease.
He has a longstanding interest in medical education. He is now Deputy Lead for Stage 2 of Undergraduate Medicine for King's College London Medical School.
Dr Mukherjee's has a wide range of expertise and experience. He collaborates widely with his colleagues to maintain up to date medical knowledge and skillsets and thereby provide the best possible care for patients. He regularly receives excellent feedback from colleagues, students and patients (Doctify).
