About me

Mr. Assad Jalil is a Consultant Ophthalmologist, Vitreo-retinal Surgeon and Uveitis Specialist at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. He has received comprehensive general ophthalmic surgical training from Manchester before undergoing further sub-specialist training in the dual fields of Surgical and Medical Retina and Uveitis. He was appointed as a Consultant in Vitreo-retina and Uveitis at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in 2014.

Mr. Jalil has a special interest in surgical and medical management of vitreous and retinal diseases: Retinal detachment; Diabetic retinopathy; Macular diseases like macular hole and epiretinal membranes; Retinal vein occlusions; Age-related Macular Degeneration (including intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy). In addition he is an expert of complex, sight-threatening ocular inflammatory disorders especially in the use of immunosuppressive medications and vitrectomy in dealing with these conditions, as well as simple and complex cataract surgery. He regularly audits his practice to ensure the highest standards of quality of care.
In addition to his clinical expertise, Mr. Jalil is a part of the research team at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital which is pioneering research into, amongst others, retinal gene therapy. He is one of the few retinal surgeons in the world performing retinal gene therapy and recently carried out one of the first ocular gene therapy surgeries in UK on a patient with a rare inherited retinal disease.
Mr. Jalil has co-authored 3 book chapters in addition to more than 30 publications in peer-reviewed ophthalmic journals. He regularly presents at national and international meetings. He is the supervisor of the well renowned Manchester Clinical Vitreo-retinal fellowship as well as the Retinal Research fellowship at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, and is involved in training vitreo-retinal surgeons from all over the world.
