About me

Ian is the Head of Specialty of Trauma and Orthopaedics at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (appointed December 2020). Ian has been working as a Consultant at Imperial since 2014, with a lead role in the Limb Reconstruction unit at the North West London Major Trauma Centre.

Ian studied at the Imperial College School of Medicine and completed his Higher Surgical Training in Trauma and Orthopaedics on the North West Thames rotation.

He completed Specialist International Fellowships in Hannover, Germany and Perth, Australia.

Ian uses the robotic Navio system for all partial and total knee replacements in the NHS and private sector, which he feels contributes to his good recorded Patient Reported Outcome Scores (PROMs).

Ian has a super specialist interest in the management of complex tibial and femoral fractures (open fractures/ mal-united/ non union/ infected fractures) and knee dislocation (pure ligaments and combined fracture and ligament injuries), and receives regional/ national and international referrals.

Ian's work in limb reconstruction for the last seven years incorporates both circular frames and the Precice nail for treating bone defects/ bone infection/ limb length discrepancy and bone deformity.

Ian strives to pioneer and innovate, demonstrated by his early adoption of navigated knee replacement in 2013 which made the transition to robotic knee replacement in 2018 seamless. Ian introduced rib fracture surgery to the North West London Major Trauma centre in 2015.

Ian has an interest in young adult knee osteoarthritis, and performs joint preserving osteotomy (realignment), knee joint distraction, and cartilage regeneration and replacement including microfracture and cartilage transplant (OATs and MACI). Ian works closely with colleagues in musculoskeletal and interventional radiology to offer intra-arterial embolisation for knee osteoarthritis.
