About me

I am a Consultant in Adult and Paediatric Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgery. In addition to general ENT surgery, I have a specialist interest in otology (conditions of the ear) including hearing loss, vertigo and dizziness, tinnitus, ear infections, hearing implants and lateral skull base surgery. I am vice-chair of the Bristol Skull Base service, managing complex referrals from colleagues throughout the entire Southwest of the UK. I am the clinical lead of the Bristol Acoustic Neuroma Service.

I was appointed as a consultant in Bristol in 2014. I undertook my medical training and additional science degree at the University of Oxford, before completing my higher surgical training in the Southwest. I was awarded the RSM Gold Medal in 2012 for my performance in the Intercollegiate FRCS (ORL-HNS) examination.

As part of my advanced specialist training, I undertook a clinical and research fellowship in Melbourne, Australia. This focused on the management of complex ear disease, cochlear implantation and lateral skull base surgery. The University of Melbourne and Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital are world renown for the development of cochlear implants. I completed research projects on the effect of hearing implantation on cochlear mechanics and novel bone-anchored hearing aids technology.

I have twice served on the council of the British Society of Otology and continue as an instructor on the annual BSO balance course. I am the current Honorary Secretary of the Royal Society of Medicine Section of Otology. I have previously been the national course director for the ENTUK Adult Emergency Surgical Skills Course for Consultants.

I have an interest in ENT research and teaching. I hold an Honorary Lectureship and Research Fellowship at the University of Bristol, School of Social and Community Medicine. I have published on a range of research subjects and authored book chapters on various aspects of ear disease. I have presented my research at numerous national and international specialist meetings. Most recently, I have published research on improving Covid-19 personal protective equipment (PPE) to help safeguard patients and surgeons during major ear surgery.
